Six Ways To Tell You're Suffering From An Obession With AWS Alphabet - Basic Concepts For SQL Server DBAs.
A year ago, Microsoft launched SQL Server 2016, a
cloud-based version of the popular database management software. Shortly after,
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that you can run SQL Server on AWS.
Datavail has just released a new white paper that destroys AWS for SQL DBA.
This blog post discusses the basic concepts that a Microsoft SQL Server DBA
needs to know about using AWS. It comes down to six anagrams: AWS, SQL, RDS,
EC2, S3 and VPC. Let's start!
AWS
VIDEO 1.1 AWS TRAINING REVIEW
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud-based hosting platform
that provides inexpensive, scalable cloud services. Starting July 2016, AWS provides support for Microsoft SQL Server. Amazon offers two ways to use SQL
Server on AWS: using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Amazon Relational
Database Service (RDS).
Support for SQL Server on AWS is Amazon's simple storage
solution (S3). In particular, there is a simple way to back up your databases
on S3. The final anagram, VPC, means Virtual Private Cloud. AWS has tools for
creating and delivering private cloud services for secure access to SQL Server
in the cloud.
Amazon boasts that AWS SQL Server offers "new features
such as real-time analysis, visualizations across devices, deeper security and
new Big Data solutions for your critical applications."
SQL
You can purchase your Microsoft SQL Server 2016 license from
AWS Marketplace or you can transfer your existing license to AWS. Amazon
supports four editions of SQL Server 2016: Express, Web, Standard, and
Enterprise.
Using SQL Server on RDS, you will not be able to connect
many of the tools you use, including OLEDB, ODBC, and ADO.NET. This is because
RDS is a managed service where software is corrected, updated and maintained by
Amazon. With EC2, the maintenance of the software depends on you.
FIG 1.1 VARIOUS TRAINING SESSION ALONG WITH AWS
Amazon offers a third choice for running SQL Server on AWS,
and it's "License Included". With this option, you pay an hourly fee
to use a licensed version of SQL Server running on RDS.
RDS
Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is a cloud-based
managed service with easy-to-use tools for setting, managing and scaling
relational databases. Security patches, software updates, and other maintenance
are managed by Amazon. If you want to get rid of the basic maintenance of your
databases so that you can concentrate on high-value reports and analyzes, RDS
is the way to go.
SQL Server running on Amazon RDS allows you to use native
backup and restore, especially useful during migrations. It provides data
encryption and secure sockets layer (SSL) for data on the move. Automatic
backups and failover are built into RDS.
EC2
With Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2), you get storage,
mainly, and you are responsible for everything else. You must purchase a
Microsoft SQL Server license or transfer your existing license to AWS. You are
responsible for updating the software, applying security patches, backups,
replication, failover, and everything that happens on the server. With EC2, you
have complete control, including access to the operating system, which is not
possible with RDS.
The biggest advantage of using EC2 is that you only pay for
what you use. You can automatically increase capacity, so your system increases
for maximum usage periods, and then offline capacity when needs are low. There
are advantageous advantages for purchases in advance, but pay-as-you-go rates
are also very interesting.
S3
Amazon Simple Storage Solution (S3) offers scalable storage
with a simple web interface. It provides a simple method for automatically
backing up your databases. You can write the backup script using Microsoft SQL
Server Management Studio or T-SQL. For step-by-step instructions on backing up
SQL Server with S3, download the Datavail white document, AWS for SQL Server
DBA.
VPC
Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is a virtual network
isolated from other virtual networks in the cloud. VPC allows you to create
private clouds within AWS and launch AWS resources (such as EC2 or RDS) into a
virtual network.
With AWS, you can choose to use their default VPC
configuration or create your own use of Amazon's Cloud Training tool. The
choice of using the Amazon VPC or the creation are low. There are advantageous
advantages to buying in advance, but pay-per-action rates are also very
interesting.S3Amazon Simple Storage Solution (S3) offers scalable storage with

Amazon EC2 provides a storage solution only when you have
access to the operating system to create your own SQL Server environment that
you are responsible for maintaining. In both cases, the Amazon S3 storage
solution and the VPC cloud authoring tools are available for SQL Server DBAs.
